Knotted linear force-free magnetic fields- topological sspects

چکیده
The problem of computing linear force-free magnetic fields on a knotted multiply-connected domain is considered. The domain is the support of the current distribution, and the linear force-free fieldproblem reduces to finding an eigenfield of a self-adjoint curl operator. In this context, the GKN Theorem is reformulated in terms of symplectic geometry in order to characterize the self-adjoint extensions of the curl operator restricted to solenoidal vector fields. When further restricted to the isotopy invariant boundary conditions, the self-adjoint extensions are parametrized by the Lagrangian subspaces of the symplectic form on the first homology group of the boundary. This paper discusses some of the topological aspects and gives some pointers for the associated finite element discretization.

Knotted solitons in nonlinear magnetic metamaterials.
We demonstrate that nonlinear magnetic metamaterials comprised of a lattice of weakly coupled split-ring resonators driven by an external electromagnetic field may support entirely new classes of spatially localized modes--knotted solitons, which are stable self-localized dissipative structures in the form of closed knotted chains. We demonstrate different topological types of stable knots for ...
متن کاملWeaving Knotted Vector Fields with Tunable Helicity.
We present a general construction of divergence-free knotted vector fields from complex scalar fields, whose closed field lines encode many kinds of knots and links, including torus knots, their cables, the figure-8 knot, and its generalizations. As finite-energy physical fields, they represent initial states for fields such as the magnetic field in a plasma, or the vorticity field in a fluid. ...
متن کاملOn the Fibration Defined by the Field Lines of a Knotted Class of Electromagnetic Fields at a Particular Time
A class of vacuum electromagnetic fields in which the field lines are knotted curves are reviewed. The class is obtained from two complex functions at a particular instant t = 0 so they inherit the topological properties of red the level curves of these functions. We study the complete topological structure defined by the magnetic and electric field lines at t = 0. This structure is not conserv...
متن کاملLinked and knotted beams of light, conservation of helicity and the flow of null electromagnetic fields
Maxwell’s equations allow for some remarkable solutions consisting of pulsed beams of light which have linked and knotted field lines. The preservation of the topological structure of the field lines in these solutions has previously been ascribed to the fact that the electric and magnetic helicities, a measure of the degree of linking and knotting between field lines, are conserved. Here we sh...
